Job Title:  Coder-Abstractor 1

Description:  The Coder I position is an entry level coding position. The Coder I position is for those employees who have either not had extensive coding experience, have been trained via coursework, and have an "apprentice" coding credential of RHIT, RHIA, CCA or CPC-A. The Coder I is a learning position but has requirements for quality and quantity. This position requires good organizational skills and the ability to accurately and timely code. The quality expected from this position is 93% accuracy. All reference material such as the on line encoder references along with Coding Clinic Guidelines, Trinity Specific Coding Guidelines, reference books and publications shall be used. Records may require abstracting on line as part of the coding process when applicable. Knowledge of the OPPS methodology and/or APC payment methodology is preferred. Progression - the employee must attain the credentials of a certified coder (CCS, CCS-P or CPC) from either the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) or the American Association of Professional Coders (AAPC) within 6 months to 2 years, respectively, before a move may be made to Coder II. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS 1.Licenses and Certifications Required RHIT, RHIA, CPC-A, or CCA required. 2.Educational Requirements High School Diploma or equivalent preferred. Medical Terminology, Anatomy, and Physiology coursework preferred. 3.Experience Requirements Minimum of one (1) year experience in a medical environment preferred. 4.Special Skills or Training Requirements Minimum typing skills of 35 characters per minute. Medical terminology and coding knowledge, required. Organizational skills required. Computer skills with billing knowledge preferred.
