POSITION TITLE & GRADE: Department Head (Special Education) CY-1710-05 STATEMENT OF DUTIES: The incumbent serves as the educational leader in organizing the Special Education program for the instructional area in a secondary setting. The incumbent will be responsible for the day-to-day administration of the Special Education Department. Duties include scheduling of leave assignment of teaching areas or rooms, staff critiques or evaluations ordering of supplies budget preparation scheduling professional services developing curriculum selecting adapted textbooks attending school board meetings teaching etc. The Department Head (Special Education) position may carry teaching or other professional non-supervisory responsibilities. This individual will closely assist the Assistant Principal and will represent the group at staff meetings, planning sessions, etc. POSITION INFORMATION: School Year Contract (Full-time Seasonal) SALARY RANGE: $29.33 TO $38.13 per hour (BIE Education Pay Schedule: based on education & experience) LOCATION: Department of Interior, Bureau of Indian Education, Associate Deputy Director-Bureau Operated Schools, Flandreau Indian School, Flandreau, South Dakota. BASIC EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS Pay Level: 05 Experience (Years): 2 Education: Master s Degree in any appropriate area of Education. Must include 12 semester hours of education administration course which may include: Curriculum Development Educational Supervision and Leadership Guidance Supervision Educational Finance and Budgeting or School Law. Applicant must possess a Valid State Teaching or Adminstrators License/certificate with a Special Education (SPED) endorsement. Emergency and provisional certificates may be accepted under the conditions they are issued by the State certification authority. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Good distant vision in one eye and ability to read without strain printed material the size of typewritten characters are required, glasses permitted. Ability to hear the conversational voice, with or without a hearing aid, is required, except that some positions may be suitable for persons who are blind or deaf. In most instances, an amputation of arm, hand, leg or foot will not disqualify an applicant for appointment, although it may be necessary that this condition be compensated by use of satisfactory prosthesis. In addition, applicants must have mental and emotional stability. BASIS OF RATING: All applicants for this position will be rated and ranked based upon the extent and quality of their experience, training and/or education as reflected on the application. Applicants will be further evaluated according to the degree to which they possess or have the potential to acquire knowledge, skills, abilities, and personal characteristics as listed below.
