Job Title:  Braille Specialist- Missoula County Public Schools 0.4FTE

Description:  Job Classification: Job Title: Braille Specialist Bargaining Unit: Merged Missoula Classified Employees Organization Reports to/Supervised by: Special Education Coordinator/Special Education Director ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES may include but are not limited to the following. Other job-related duties may be assigned A. ASSIST STUDENTS, TEACHERS, STAFF, AND ADMINISTRATORS by ? Monitoring and documenting student s performance and reporting progress to teacher ? Administering Braille evaluations and assessments and contributing to the development of the IEP/CST ? Facilitating the instruction of evaluated Braille readers in a Braille reading program which includes, but is not limited to, literature, math and foreign language codes ? Facilitating the instruction of Braille readiness skills to younger students ? Serving as a liaison between the teacher of the Vision Impaired and general education teachers ? Transcribing all classroom materials including but not limited to work sheets, tests and those textbooks not available in Braille format from other sources ? Adapting materials and programs for students with low vision who are not Braille readers ? Instructing student(s) in the use of adaptive materials and technology including but not limited to Braille note taker, computer screen readers, talking calculators and dictionaries, printers, and embossers ? Assisting in orientation and mobility training for students with visual impairments ? Acting as liaison between the state school and the public school in the procurement of books and materials ? Providing a safe learning environment for assigned student(s) B. MAINTAIN A COOPERATIVE AND PROFESSIONAL RELATIONSHIP WITH STAFF AND SUPERVISORS by ? Establishing and maintaining effective and cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work ? Communicating effectively with those contacted in the course of work C. MAINTAIN A HIGH LEVEL OF ETHICAL BEHAVIOR AND CONFIDENTIALITY OF ANY INFORMATION REGARDING STUDENTS, PERSONNEL AND ALL JOB RELATED MATTERS D. TEAM RESPONSIBILITIES: Employee works independently with infrequent supervisory instruction. Under the direction of the supervisor, the employee may supervise students or volunteers. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education, Licensure and Certification ? High School Diploma or G.E.D. ? Braille Transcribing Certification (Library of Congress) Experience ? Experience in a job-related position preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities ? Special knowledge, skills, and abilities with Braille software programs and hardware including but not limited to Duxbury Braille Translation, Connect Outloud, Jaws screen reader, talking typers, Braille calculators and dictionaries, and scanners lessons ? Special knowledge, skills, and abilities in the use of literary, nemeth (math) and ? Ability to operate computers, printers, and other standard office equipment ? Special knowledge, skills, and abilities with word processing software including, but not limited to Microsoft Word foreign language Braille codes ? Skill regarding sensitivity to, cultural aspects of blindness ? Ability to develop individualized Braille lessons ? Orientation and mobility skills ? Ability to write, read, and comprehend simple instructions and correspondence ? Ability to understand and carry out oral or written instruction ? Ability to communicate effectively ? Ability to handle stressful situations ? Ability to successfully fulfill assigned performance responsibilities by effectively managing time and responsibilities ? Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students and staff Physical Demands: The physical demands that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job include sitting, standing, lifting or moving up to 25 lbs without assistance and/or lifting up to 1/3 of his/her body weight with assistance. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
